bubbly red cocktail with rosemary and cranberries

This Cranberry Sorel Spritz is a festive holiday drink featuring Sorel Liqueur. Sorel brings tart hibiscus and the best baking spices of the season together in one delicious spirit. Paired with some bright grapefruit, tart cranberry and champagne it’s the perfect bubbly cocktail to sip and savor special moments during the the holidays as well as for catching up with friends over a long brunch.

Sorel Liqueur

When I say you need to have Sorel in your home bar, I mean go get some ASAP for happy tonight. It’s really really delicious. Sorel liqueur is a newer spirit (or rather back on the market for the first time in a decade), but already coming for every back bar and home bar. As it should. It works just as well as a main spirit as it is as a modifier in drinks, but I also feel like Sorel is cocktail in itself. Although it’s a labeled as a liqueur and low ABV at 15%, it is pleasantly balanced, not too sweet, and the layers of flavors really linger as you sip. The flavors of clove, ginger and hibiscus are a great addition to so many holiday cocktails, punches, and warm weather drinks.

Sorel vs. Sorrel

If you are familiar with Sorrel at all, Sorel has a familiar flavor profile and maybe even brings up memories of the holidays and family gatherings. Sorrel recipes vary from one family to the next, but can include hibiscus, ginger, cloves, orange and allspice and sometimes mixed with rum to make a punch. Sorel Liqueur is a shelf-stable, spirited version of the traditional Sorrel drink made in Jamaica and through out the African Diaspora. Enslaved Africans brought hibiscus with them to Jamaica and West Indies where there were often also spice ports. Putting together a mixture of spices and hibiscus they combined them with Jamaican rum to create a drink to remind them of home. This drink spread through out the Caribbean and other slave owning countries including the US. It has since become a holiday staple for many families each often having their own recipes for this red drink. Jackie Summers the founder of Sorel has a great and cheeky explanation here of the difference between the two here!
