Trick Dog for President cocktail menu // craftandcocktails.coWith today being arguably the most crucial, nail biting, and heated election days of our time, I wanted to interject a little joviality into today’s narrative(s). There are few things you can’t discuss in a bar: money, religion and politics (same rules apply for my family get togethers.) Not one for staying inside the box or staying away from taboos: Trick Dog bar decide to add some fun into the other wise dreary topic. The newest bi-annual menu for one of San Francisco’s most innovative cocktail bars is oh-so-timely and poignant: Trick Dog For President.

Put another clown in the White House! If you are familiar with Trick Dog, their name comes from a vintage bank with a clown doing tricks with dogs (and would be more qualified to run our country than a certain clown-like male candidate.*) Trick Dog is run by the talented The Bon Vivants. They have their hand in many bar program, resturants, and events through out SF, but Trick Dog is their most playful project and crowning glory.

The cocktails are named for political slogans or controversies connected to past presidents like Drill Baby Drill + I Like Ike. They steered clear of current election issues and candidates, avoiding serious bar brawls, and instead opting to poke fun at prior campaigns making the process a bit more light hearted, which I am sure we all need at this point. Drinks are garnished with their usual attention to detail, but now feature American Flag picks and baseball skewers. Baseball + drinking, America’s two favorite pass times!

Recalling campaign buttons, each drink is listed on a button attached to the sheet. I have had the chance to try everything on the menu, for research’s sake, and these are ones that stand out to me:

  • A Big Stick- George Dickle Rye, Sacred Bond Brandy, Venus Aquavit, Charred Orange, Absinthe served neat
  • 54-40 or Fight- Rhum Clement, Cynar, blanc vermouth, plum, coffee, lime on crushed ice dashed with Aleepo
  • I Am Not a Crook: Tapatio Reposado Tequila, peach, garam masala, soda, lime served on the rocks
  • Romanism and Rebellion: Don Q Anejo Rum, Suze, Avocado, almond, cinnamon, lime, with whipped coconut

The Romanism and Rebellion is a creamy, smooth, dessert featuring avocado, rum, Suze + whipped coconut cream that I could suck down quiet a few of, no problem. I mean, look at that cloud of coconut cream up there ^^^ Other things of note on the menu are their boilermakers (one even featuring St. Germain paired with cider), highballs, and low-proof drinks which are becoming more popular options on bar menus for the DD’s out there.
